Food Intolerance & Sensitivities
Food intolerances and sensitivities are different from allergies and can be complex to navigate.
Food intolerances, sensitivities and other adverse reactions are not technically allergies. Though the symptoms may be similar, the causes, our bodies’ reactions and the health implications are different.
There are a number of unorthodox testing methods for allergy and intolerances offered by alternative practitioners which are not evidence-based. Diagnosis relies an examination of clinical history along with clinical testing to determine whether allergy or another immune condition is likely to be the cause of symptoms. A medically supervised elimination diet may also be prescribed if appropriate.
A proper medical diagnosis is essential. Whole food groups should never be excluded from the diet without proper medical investigation. This is especially important for growing children.
